Susannah Shute is the British artist behind the Como Sunprints project. She lives and works in Cernobbio, a small town on the western shore of Lake Como, creating contemporary artworks designed to adorn the walls of homes. Each of her pieces is unique, capable of conveying the serenity and elegance of the natural landscapes and wonders of Lake Como. Susannah Shute’s art is directly inspired by the beauty of these surroundings: the manicured gardens and lakeside walks, the dense forests and the wind-swept peaks, as well as the ever-changing mood of the Lake itself. Susannah Shute works with the cyanotype technique, an ancient form of cameraless photography that produces images in striking shades of blue and white. She enhances these with gold leaf or other decorations using mixed media. Many of her works are botanical, created directly with plant material, but she also uses large-format negatives or manipulates light and shadow directly. In addition to artworks created for walls, Susannah Shute works on handmade papers and printmaking papers that can be mounted on canvas or wooden panels. Drawing inspiration from the rich history of silk production in the Como area, she also creates silk tapestries, scarves, and foulards. She describes her art as follows: «I want my work to transport you to the forest or the flowerbed. To the garden, the summit, or the lake. Wherever you find your serenity and joy».SUSANNAH SHUTE
